Colors and Feng Shui

Colors often have a big effect on emotion. Babies’ rooms are often painted in a pale blue or light pink, offices in a neutral beige or white, and living rooms in calming pastels. Feng shui, which often matches our instinctual choices, utilizes color to obtain that optimal harmony and balance in a space. This ancient art form (dating back some 7,000 years) can be instrumental in a variety of settings: apartment rentals, homes, offices, plus much more. If implemented correctly, feng shui can make a real difference in one’s life. Here’s what the colors mean.

Purple, blue, green, and red: wealth

Red: fame and status in life

Earth tones (brown, yellow, rust, green): health and family

Pastels: creativity

Pink, red, and white: love

Green, black: knowledge

Dark tones (i.e. black): career

Black, gray, white: travel and helpful people.

As you can notice from the list, some colors can have dual meanings. Red, for instance, can mean wealth as well as fame. Actually, these two aspects are intertwined, as wealth often affects your status in life. If you wanted to paint your office in your home or apartment rental, you might consider painting it a pastel tone to improve your overall creativity. Your family room, however, might do better with an earth tone such as a light brown or green. Experiment with the colors (paint small sections of the room) to get a real feel for the change in the apartment rental. If you end up picking a color you don’t like, you can always repaint. Your landlord probably won’t mind, as long as your apartment rental is in good shape.

Combining instinct and taste with feng shui

Feng shui can serve as a basis for your color choices. Red might mean love and overall positive well-being according to feng shui, but if red is not to your liking, use it in limited doses. Maybe you won’t paint your den red, but perhaps you can throw in some red and white accent pillows on the couch. Just a small dose of the color can really liven up your apartment rental.

The bottom line is to utilize feng shui in combination with color preferences. Even though feng shui is an ancient, respected art form, you’re the one that has to be comfortable in your apartment rental.
