Homes for Rent – Checking out the Neighborhood

One of the most difficult decisions to make when deciding to buy a house is choosing which neighborhood to move in to. With so many choices out there, you’ll never know if you have chosen the “right” neighborhood. One way to know for sure if you have chosen the right neighborhood is to rent out one of the homes for rent in the neighborhood you have chosen.

How to find homes for rent in your ideal location

Finding homes for rent in your ideal neighborhood is easier than you might think. Your first line of attack is to actually drive through the neighborhood and search for “homes for rent” signs. A lot of rental homes are “by owner” properties, and are not always listed in real estate offices. That’s because these owners want to save money on the real estate agent’s commission. These for sale by owner properties are however commonly listed in the local papers in the classified section.

Another great source of rental homes is online property listing sites. These sites advertise all types of properties such as rentals, homes for sale, vacation homes, and much more. What’s nice about these sites is that they usually advertise listings throughout the country, not in just one neighborhood. This is ideal in case you’re searching for homes for rent 3,000 miles away. You don’t have to book an airline ticket until you’ve narrowed your search to about three or four rental properties. That’s easy to achieve considering that the majority of properties include pictures of the rental. You’ll know the color of the master bathroom even before you step on to that plane.

Financial considerations

Unlike a having a hefty mortgage in a home purchase, rental homes only require first and last month down, plus a security deposit (usually a month’s rent). In addition, with most rental contracts only requiring from anywhere from one year to a three year maximum contract, it doesn’t really tie you in that long (just long enough to get a real sense of the neighborhood). If you really like the neighborhood you’ve chosen after the rental contract term has ended, you might even have the option to buy the house and use some of the past rental payments towards the purchase price
